The ENORME Telephone is designed by Ettore Sottsass, founder of Memphis Milano, in collaboration with David Kelley, who would go on to co-found IDEO. The venture is backed by investor Jean Pigozzi. It is conceived as a consumer object built to the standards of a design object — a postmodern telephone for the domestic desk.

The telephone slips out of production and into design history. It enters the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the RISD Museum, and LACMA. No new units reach the public for four decades.
Five hundred original telephones are discovered in a time capsule at Stanford, still sealed in their original factory packaging — the last known stock in existence.

The company stewards the acquisition of Masanori Umeda's Tawaraya by the Museum of Modern Art — see below — and launches a merchandise line: original prints of Jean Pigozzi's 1984–86 photographs of Ettore Sottsass, alongside sweatshirts, caps, and totes.
Masanori Umeda's Tawaraya, a 1981 Memphis piece, entered the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 2026. ENORME stewarded the acquisition and holds a permanent credit in the collection.

A creative director and entrepreneur in Los Angeles. She spent close to a decade at American Apparel, latterly as senior creative director, and in 2016 co-founded the clothing brand Everybody.World.
He co-founded the New York data company Enigma Technologies in 2012, where he is chief executive. He studied philosophy and mathematics at Columbia University.
An Italian architect and designer. He began working with Ettore Sottsass in Milan in 1977, co-founded Sottsass Associati in 1980, and has been part of Memphis since its founding.
A writer and director working between Los Angeles and New York, making stories for brands and people. Her work spans brand strategy, creative direction, copywriting, and content and social strategy. She studied at Hamilton College.
An engineer, designer, and educator. He founded the practice that became IDEO in 1978, and in 2004 led the creation of Stanford's d.school, where he is Faculty Director. He engineered the ENORME Telephone with Sottsass.
A collector, photographer, and investor. In 1989 he founded the Contemporary African Art Collection, the largest private collection of contemporary African art, and has photographed friends and public figures since the 1970s.
